Cystoscopy

Cystoscopy is a procedure which is usually performed in our office. The physician uses a fiber optic scope to examine your bladder. This scope, which is made up of a long flexible tube, an eye piece, and a high intensity light is inserted into your urethra and makes its way into the bladder. A local anesthetic is inserted into the urethra. Most patients find cystoscopy uncomfortable but quite tolerable. We are able to identify bladder and urethral abnormalities such as bladder tumors by performing this procedure.

Pre Op Instructions

There is no prep for this procedure. If you require antibiotics before dental work or other invasive medical procedures please let us know as cystoscopy is also considered an invasive procedure.

Post Op Instructions

  • After returning home you will be able to eat your regular diet.  Most people do not experience any pain or discomfort after the cystoscopy.  Occasionally, there is a pink color (blood) in the urine or slight burning sensations when urinating for the first few times after the cystoscopy.
  • At home, you may resume your regular activities and diet unless Dr. Weyrich tells you otherwise.
  • You should drink AT LEAST FOUR TO SIX GLASSES OF WATER  or other liquids every day, unless Dr. Weyrich instructs you differently.  Also, you should ask the doctor if there are any liquids that you should not drink.
  • It is normal to pass small amounts of blood for several days during urination.  If you pass any LARGE BLOOD CLOTS or have difficulty urinating, contact Dr. Weyrich.  If you are unable to contact Dr. Weyrich and feel you need treatment, go to your nearest Emergency Department.
  • Finally, please take the antibiotic given to you as instructed by the office staff.
