Prostatectomy (Radical Retropubic Prostatectomy)
Prostatectomy is performed to remove a cancerous prostate gland. It is one of several different treatments for prostate cancer. This surgery is performed in the hospital. You will be admitted several hours prior to your surgery time and will stay in the hospital a number of days (usually three to four). Your urologist will have counseled you on the possible outcomes of this surgery before you are even scheduled.
Pre Op Instructions
Two Days Before Surgery
Follow a strict clear liquid diet consisting of the following:
Beef Broth | Chicken Broth | Plain Jello |
Coffee | Tea | Soda Pop |
Kool-Aid | Popsicles | Grape Juice |
Apple Juice | Fruit Drinks | Cranberry Juice |
You MAY NOT have the following liquids
Milk | Dairy Products | Orange Juice |
Tomato Juice | Pineapple Juice |
At 5:00pm DRINK one bottle (12 oz) of Magnesium Citrate (This can be purchased at any drug store).
The Day Before Surgery
Continue the clear liquid diet.
At 5:00pm DRINK one bottle (12 oz) of Magnesium Citrate
At 8:00pm Take ONE Fleets enema (This can be purchased at any drug store).
After midnight DO NOT eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery
POST Op Instructions
CONTACT THE DOCTOR IF:
There are any signs of infection, such as a fever greater than 101.5 F, undue swelling or pain.
